Pursuit of Research and Academic Careers
The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree is intended primarily for students who desire a career in research, advanced development, or teaching. Ph.D. programs are designed to give students a broad background in mathematics and engineering sciences, together with intensive study and research experience in a specialized area.
Since thesis supervision is required, admission is not granted until the student has secured faculty supervision of a research project (which usually includes arranging funding through a research assistantship).
