Join us in this week's ME268 "Robotics, AI and Design of Future Education" invited talk featuring Prof. Larry Leifer, Founding Director of the Stanford Center for Design Research.

Title: Dancing with Neurodesign: Embracing neuroscience instruments to better design human collaboration

Abstract: This presentation seeks to illuminate the neuro-biological basis of creative behavior in design thinking teams. We now instrument the physiological processes in ways that predict breakthrough creative achievements. Conversely when does our neuro-biology incline us to think in terms of conventional problem formulations and solution fixation? Through courting ambiguity, we can let invention happen even if we cannot make it happen. We can nurture behaviors that increase the probability of finding a path to innovation. Emphasis is placed on the questions we ask. A suite of research findings will illustrate the concepts in principle and in action.

Speaker Biography: Dr. Larry Leifer is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering in the School of Engineering at Stanford University. He joined the faculty in 1976 after serving as an assistant professor at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, and 4 years at the NASA Ames Research Center’s Human Information Processing laboratory. His education credentials include a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Science, Master’s degree in Product Design (art), and PhD in Biomedical Engineering (neurosciences). He has served as founding director of the Stanford Veterans Administration Rehabilitation Engineering R&D Center; Smart Product Design Lab; Center for Design Research (CDR); Stanford Learning Lab; and Hasso Plattner Design Thinking Research Program at Stanford.

ME268 “Robotics, AI and Design of Future Education” was instructed by Dr. Li Jiang from Design Group, Mechanical Engineering.   This class consists of lectures from Dr.Jiang and invited talks from experts in the industry and academia to discuss the state of the art in the field of Robotics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and how that will impact the future Education. The time of robotics/AI are upon us. Within the next 10 to 20 years, many jobs will be replaced by robots/AI. We will cover hot topics in Robotics, AI, how we need to prepare students for the rise of Robotics/AI, and how we Re-design and Re-invent our education to adapt to the new era.
