Message of Support - Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion

Dear Mechanical Engineering Community,

The recent events surrounding the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery, Breonna Taylor, and George Floyd have upset many in our Stanford Engineering community. These deaths were needless and tragic. They remind us that our country still needs to achieve equal justice for all and address the issue of racism, especially as it impacts our nation's Black community. Those of us who are not Black cannot fully understand what the Black experience is in this country. We are privileged to do things without concern that Black people simply cannot. Black students are living in cities that are undergoing an unprecedented amount of turmoil. They are afraid, disappointed, and exhausted. It's important that we, as members of the Mechanical Engineering community and as human beings, unite in a clear voice to condemn racism and discrimination of all kinds.

Stanford Mechanical Engineering does not tolerate any hateful language, images, or other acts of intolerance, as we are building a safe and inclusive community in person and online. There are two things we all can do: support each other by reaching out to those in pain, and stand up as a community to reaffirm our support for justice for all communities. It is our mission to educate engineers who will advocate for and nurture the diversity of our nation to create justice for all. We must continue to strive for a world in which discrimination and hate have no presence, and those who perpetuate hateful and racist acts are held accountable.

As a department, we invite discussion and participation in thinking how to address these issues. Please reach out to Sheri Sheppard at sheppard@stanford.edu if you would like to engage in these activities. We encourage the entire Mechanical Engineering Community to participate in a Zoom Town Hall on Thursday, June 11, at 1:30pm to come together and discuss our next steps.
