Mechanical engineering undergraduate students
The goal of the undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering is to provide students with a balance of intellectual and practical experiences that enable them to address a variety of societal needs. Prospective students, find information for applying in the admissions area.

The Mechanical Engineering program is designed to provide students with a wide range of options within the field of mechanical engineering. The discipline is very broad, encompassing elements of these areas:
- energy science and technology
- sensing and control
- nano- and micro-mechanics
- design mechatronics
- computational simulation
- solid and fluid dynamics
- micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS)
- biomechanical engineering
Students interested in declaring ME as their major must have an advisor assigned to them. Students may choose their own advisor if they have already built a relationship with an ME faculty member.

Stanford undergraduates can apply to study for a master’s degree and complete their bachelor’s degree in parallel. ME and all other engineering graduate programs offer coterminal study in their MS programs — an option chosen by about 40 percent of the school’s undergraduates, according to recent data. Most engineering coterminal (commonly known as “coterm”) students earn both degrees within five years, and nearly all do so within six years.
